Having had sat thru my own graduation this weekend (yay!) and I have another one next weekend, I had to share this one…
Denzel Washington recieved an honorary degree this weekend from the University of Pennsylvania where he was the commencement speaker.
And – he had some stage fright while he was adressing 5,000 graduates!
To think that Denzel, at 56, having had starred in Malcom X, Philadelphia and many other films gets scared I can totally be fine!
And for all of you that sometimes don’t do well, just know that Denzel Washington was pre-med, then pre-law, then jounalism, and was to flunking out before changing to drama and getting his degree. Wow… And I thought that I had done a lot of changing from one thing to another – I’ve got nearly nothng on Denzel Washington!
Washington received an honorary doctorate at the ceremony this weekend. By granting the degree, Penn President Amy Gutmann said his moving performances have “entertained us, inspired us and often enlightened us.” She also praised his off-screen work with charities and social causes, including the Boys & Girls Clubs of America.
“Do you have the guts to fail?” Washington said. “If you don’t fail, you’re not even trying.”
