That turtle will get big and dirty and stinky, nasty in about a year. You'll be dying to get rid of it. Their tanks are hard to keep clean. I know... I've had them. Good luck, though. She's cute.

Oh, and FYI. Red-Earred Sliders are not indigenous to FL. The come from the Louisiana area and should never be released into the wild because they are interbreeding with FL's native yellow bellied sliders, eradicating the species. In fact, it is against the law in FL to release red earred sliders into the wild.

These turtles are sold as pets in malls, etc, and people dump them when the novelty has worn off. Older sliders are usually dumped because they become quite aggressive when they're older. Just be careful of Kyla's finger, because they will bite, but this is usually preceded by a warning hiss. Hatchlings are generally tolerant of handling.

Dana, be sure you're feeding her a proper diet with plenty of Vitamin A. Otherwise, turtles can get bulging eyes, which can result in death. Commercial diets are fine, but be sure to add some Calcium powder to it for a strong shell. You'll also need a high quality turtle filter (water filtration) and a UVA light and a basking platform- otherwise she can get shell rot. I have two turtles, and they're quite costly.
